Russian organizers put on a showcase of "real winter" to the world when Krasnoyarsk, one of the oldest Siberian cities and the regional capital of Krasnoyarsk Krai, set stage to the 29th Winter Universiade held from 2 to 12 March 2019.
This iteration of the Winter Universiade marked the third time overall that FISU's World University Games went to Russia (and the second occasion as a sovereign state), the first one being in the 1973 Summer Universiade in Moscow - at the time when Russia was part of the Soviet Union, whereas Kazan, capital of Tatarstan, held the 2013 edition.
Krasnoyarsk began its work in organizing the Winter Universiade when they were given the event's hosting rights by FISU in a closed vote held on 9 November 2013. The city along the Yenisei River was sole bidder in contention; the other candidate, the Canton of Valais in Switzerland, withdrew from the race just a couple of months before the awarding.
The Krasnoyarsk Universiade featured about 1,692 athletes from 68 countries participate in 76 medal events across 11 sports. Among one of these 11 sports were ski-orienteering as well as bandy - a popular Russian team sport, both of which were included as optional sports chosen by the organizers.
