The IAAF World Championships in Athletics took place in the Russian capital of Moscow from 10 to 18 August 2013. Luzhniki Stadium was the centrepiece during these 2013 Championships, and the meet itself was the last major international event held at the venue before closing its doors to give way for renovations ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

At the meet, Jamaicans Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce nailed the golden hat-trick in their respective men's and women's events to become the most successful athletes at these World Championships. At the same time, this achievement earned Bolt the title of being the most successful athlete in the event's history, with eight golds and two silvers.

Initially, Russia won the most golds to top the medal table at the World Championships for the first time since 2001 at Edmonton, Canada, but numerous Russian athletes were stripped of their medals for doping violations, thus carrying Team USA atop with eight golds and 26 medals overall. Jamaica and Kenya rounded up the top three after respectively finishing at second and third.
