Up in the heights of Kallipara hills, bloomed the precious Neelakurinji, also known as kurinji, painting the hills of Munnar in the brightest and purest blue you will ever see.

For the months of September and October, Kallipara Hills became one of the most visited tourist destinations in Kerala. Neelakurinji, scientifically named Strobilanthes kunthiana from the family of Acanthaceae, is a rare shrub whose flower blooms once every 12 years across the western ghats of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

The amazing shrub covers the spread of Munnar like a blueish-purple tapestry. This rare phenomenon, with its special appearance, makes Kerala one of the best tourist destinations of the season.Towards the end of its shortlived arrival, the flower turns its hue, announcing its departure. The protection of the Neelakurinji is taken up by the state, and instructions and strict guidelines are regulated.
