Owned by the State of Nevada and operated by a historic foundation, the museum is dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of the railway. It's one of the few places in the world where visitors can operate a steam locomotive (with some advanced planning).
🐈Dirt the Cat's Legacy🐈
In the spring of 2008, a little orange and white kitten named Dirt was found in the engine house, nestled among the machinery. This scrappy kitten quickly adapted to his unusual surroundings, and over time, Dirt became a beloved figure on the railway. Known for his distinctive coal-dust-covered coat and wise, watchful presence, Dirt captured the hearts of all who worked there. His endearing personality and unique look turned him into an unofficial mascot, symbolizing the hardworking spirit of the railway.
Although Dirt has passed away, his legacy lives on through his protégé, DJ (Dirt Junior). DJ has seamlessly taken over the role of "Boss Shop Cat," continuing to oversee the daily hustle and bustle of the engine house.
