Plants convert sunlight into plant tissue, obtain nutrients from the soil, and perform a myriad of other ecological “tasks” upon which all life depends. Join Dr. Michelle Bowe as she breaks down the basics of plant physiology to help us all have a better understanding of the awe-inspiring world of plant growth and function.
Michelle Bowe grew up in South Carolina where she explored the woods and meadows with her childhood best friend and became fascinated by all of the plant life around creeks and in the forest. In high school, she made a leaf collection (that she still has!), and the species are still among those she currently teaches. She went to Wofford College in South Carolina as a biology major and fell in love with botany. She then pursued a PhD at Vanderbilt University, studying seed plant evolution using molecular data and morphology. Her first faculty position soon followed at Frostburg State University in Maryland, and then in 2002, she moved to Springfield to teach at Missouri State University. Courses she’s taught include Plant Taxonomy, Identification of Woody Plants, Vascular Plant Morphology, and Applications of Molecular Techniques.
