This happens a lot to a few systems which had certain older Nvidia video cards. There is an issue of compatibility with the video card drivers and xorg nouveau dirvers.

Install NVIDIA GeForce driver in Ubuntu 14.04 / 13.10 / 13.04 / 12.04 using PPA

To add PPA for Ubuntu 14.04 / 13.10 / 13.04 / 12.10

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-settings
