Xiaomi has announced the launch of a new power adapter capable of fast charging in India. The new adapter comes with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 support that enables fast charging with power output of 18W.
The launch of this power adapter comes on the heels of Xiaomi Mi A1 getting Android 8.0 Oreo update, which brings fast charging support to company’s first Android One device. In its product page, Xiaomi says its new 380V charger is designed to handle India’s frequent power surge and the charger is kept below 30 degree celsius while in use to prevent overheating.
Xiaomi’s new charger is a 9V/2A adapter with power output of 18W but seems to be regulating the output to 15W if the device does not support fast charging. It comes with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, a fast charging standard common among smartphones powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile platform.
Xiaomi is calling the charger as India Standard Adapter 9V 2A and is priced at Rs 449. Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, the two flagship smartphones with Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset rely on Quick Charge 3.0 and use a 9V/2A adapter for charging.
The adapter seems to be having a regular USB port so those planning to buy the charger need to confirm that the charging cable supplied with their smartphone has regular USB port at one end. Xiaomi is currently the leader in the Indian smartphone space and is making an interesting move by expanding beyond smartphones. It also sells other mobile accessories including power bank and headphones.
According to Qualcomm, select smartphones are compatible with the company's Quick Charge 3.0 Technology. While Xiaomi Mi 5, Xiaomi Mi 5s, Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus, Xiaomi Mi 6, Xiaomi Mi Max, Xiaomi Mi Max 2, Xiaomi Mi Note 2, and Xiaomi MIX 2 are listed, only three of the handsets are currently available in India. So, Mi 5, Mi Max 2 and Mi MIX 2 users can purchase the new adapter. Also, the new power adapter launch has come right after Xiaomi announced the Android 8.0 Oreo update for Mi A1, that has brought fast charging support to the first Android One device from the Chinese company.
