Auto white balance, or AWB for short, is usually good enough for most photography, but there are three good reasons to set your own custom white balance even when working in the smallest home studio.
The first reason is for consistent color across an entire photo session, which makes for a smoother editing process. An incorrect white balance can also change the perception of exposure, and finally, incorrect skin tones stand out for all the wrong reasons.
In this video, pro photographer Gavin Hoey breaks down three simple ways how to set a custom white balance for your photoshoots:
1. Manually Set the White Balance: Dial in a custom white balance that looks about right based on the lighting in your home studio.
2. Use a Gray Card: For a more accurate approach, use a gray card to help your camera find the perfect white balance for the scene.
3. Edit with a Color Chart in Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop Camera RAW: This method allows you to select a white balance that's accurate and perfectly suits the vibe of your photo.
