God of War Ragnarök is an action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Released on November 9, 2022, for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, it marks the first cross-generation release in the franchise. This installment is the ninth in the series, both in terms of release and its place in the overarching timeline, following directly after the events of God of War (2018).
The game expands on the previous title's blend of Norse mythology and open-world exploration. While God of War (2018) allowed players to visit six of the nine realms, Ragnarök offers the opportunity to explore all nine, with new locations such as Svartalfheim, home of the industrious dwarves; Vanaheim, the lush domain of the Vanir gods; and Asgard, the majestic realm of the Aesir gods. Returning realms like Midgard, the setting of much of the previous game, have changed drastically due to Fimbulwinter, a great, three-year-long winter. Iconic places like the Lake of the Nine are now frozen over, making navigation vastly different. Svartalfheim takes on a central role, as rich and detailed as Midgard once was, while realms like Alfheim, Helheim, and Niflheim are reimagined with more depth and content.
The story picks up three years after the events of God of War (2018), with Kratos and his teenage son Atreus navigating the fallout of Fimbulwinter. As the winter draws to a close, it sets the stage for Ragnarök, the end of days in Norse mythology. Together, they set out across the nine realms to prevent Ragnarök and uncover more about Atreus' true identity as Loki. Along the way, they will encounter key figures like Týr, the Norse God of War, and clash with formidable foes such as Thor, the God of Thunder. Their journey is not just a quest to stop the apocalypse but also one of self-discovery and confronting fate.
