Sad but True is a song by the American metal band Metallica. The song was released in spring 1993 as the fifth and final single from their fifth studio album Metallica. It was written by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. On September 13, 1990, the band recorded a demo version of the song, which differs from the final version in that it has a much higher speed. Singer James Hetfield found the original version “too friendly” and was bothered by the hectic singing. Nevertheless, producer Bob Rock was enthusiastic about the song and said that the song could become the Kashmir of the 1990s. Rock referred to a song by the band Led Zeppelin.

The musicians and Rock decided to slow down the tempo, which gave the song more punch. Band manager Cliff Burnstein stated that "you can pull teeth with this song".Aside from the cover versions, Metallica tuned the guitars one tone lower for only the second time in their career. The first time the band did this was with The Thing that Should Not Be. Before the guitar solo, the music stops for six beats. James Hetfield explained that the band learned not to fill every break with music or guitars. During the chorus, Hetfield also plays a slide guitar, which initially displeased Kirk Hammett.

James Hetfield got the inspiration for the song from the 1978 feature film Magic - An Uncanny Love Story. Lars Ulrich explained in an interview that the song is about how different personalities in a person's psyche make the person affected do different things. It also explores how these things come into conflict and fight to gain control over the person.[

Sad but True is one of nine songs that Metallica played at more than 1,000 concerts. The others are Master of Puppets, Creeping Death, One, Seek & Destroy, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Enter Sandman, Fade To Black and Nothing Else Matters. In July 2000, Kid Rock took over vocals at three concerts because James Hetfield was unable to perform due to an injury. In June 2004, Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison filled in for Lars Ulrich after he had to be hospitalized for a medical emergency. At some concerts in autumn 2004, James Hetfield sang the song together with Godsmack singer Sully Erna.

Stefan Popp from the online magazine Metal1.info described the song as "very strong", although it is based on "one of the simplest riffs in the band's history". Sad but True was ranked number 11 in Guitar World magazine's list of the 100 best Metallica songs of all time. It is the highest-ranked song from the Metallica album. The single reached number 20 in the British, number 42 in the German and number 98 in the US single charts.
