In the 1990s, Roger Penrose and Stuart Hameroff put forth a theory that aimed to prove that human consciousness is influenced by quantum mechanics. Now, new studies suggests they may have been right after all. Quantum physics has grown by leaps and bounds in the past decades, explaining the workings of everything from the tiniest quarks to the largest galaxy clusters. But explaining things that reside “only in consciousness” has proven far more difficult. When people talk about consciousness, or the mind, it’s always a bit vague. Whether we create consciousness in our brains as a function of our neurons firing, or consciousness exists independently of us, there’s no universally accepted scientific explanation for where it comes from or where it lives. However, new research of consciousness has begun to reveal its possible form. In other words, we may soon be able to identify a true architecture of consciousness.
