Charles Sobhraj is a French thief, con man and serial killer. In the 1970s, hunted Western tourists along the Hippie Trail in Southeast Asia.
Nicknamed "The Bikini Killer" for the clothing of his victims and "The Serpent" for his skillful lies and ability to hide from justice. Committed at least 12 murders and was imprisoned in India from 1976 to 1997. After his release he lived in Paris. He then returned to Nepal in 2003, where he was arrested, put on trial and given a life sentence.
Unlike most criminals, did not commit his murders due to the uncontrollable, deep-seated aggressive impulses that many serial killers experience; this was more seen as a by-product of his lifestyle, but it is still widely believed that he suffers from antisocial personality disorder, or a form of psychopathy. He hated hippies and many of his murders reflected this. He used his appearance in a criminal career. This, and his cunning, secured him "celebrity" status well before his release from prison.
