Lonely Elephant Madhubala Prepares for Relocation to New Sanctuary | FOUR PAWS USA
Exciting update on #Elephant Madhubala!
Since the heartbreaking loss of her dear partner, Noor Jehan, in April 2023, we have put all our efforts into providing a species-appropriate solution for lonely elephant Madhubala, aiming to free her from solitary confinement at Karachi Zoo.
Here are some important milestones:
🌟 August 2023: We returned to Karachi to finalize the transport crate and place it at the zoo. This was the start of the planning phase for vital adaptations at Karachi Safari Park.
🌟 October 2023: Our elephant and husbandry experts returned to Madhubala to begin crate training with her, preparing her for a potential transfer.
🌟 March 2024: Part of our team met with important stakeholders and checked up on Madhubala, Malika, and Sonia.
🎉 April 2024: Our team is back in Karachi, and the improvement work at the Safari Park has started!
The below measures will be implemented before Madhubala's transfer:
Expanding the enclosure with elephant-proof fencing by nearly 25 acres. This will TRIPLE the original size, covering approximately 35 acres.
Vital water features will be installed, providing the elephants with the opportunity to bathe in a pool or mud bath. This is essential for their skincare, thermoregulation, and mental well-being, offering them positive experiences.
To further enhance their mental health, various enrichment activities are planned, including hay nets, diverse substrates, designated areas for the elephants to rub and scratch themselves, as well as enrichment toys, enriching their cognitive and sensory capacities.
To ensure the lasting well-being of the three sisters, the animal caretakers will undergo additional training in elephant husbandry.
Imagining Madhubala exploring an expanded green space and reconnecting with Malika and Sonia in the near future fills our hearts with joy.
