March of Dimes - May 4, 2014
March for Babies at the Jersey Shore in Asbury Park, NJ - May 4, 2014. Most of the 1000 walkers were out on the boardwalk when this video was taken, so I spun vinyl for the volunteers who waited for their return to the Start / Finish line. I was in the center of it all with Convention Hall, Howard Johnsons, The Wonder Bar and the Berkeley Carteret Hotel surrounding me. The set up is vintage with the mixer designed and built by me in 1975 - still sounds great - as do the 45's of course!
This is old school mobile DJ to the max, with many components going back to the 1970's. The stuff is bullet proof, however, compared to today's "digital" systems, weighs a ton and requires a trailer to haul it all around. Plus it takes an hour to set up and another hour to pack up!
Back in the 1970's we had the metro NYC / New Jersey market to ourselves playing to most High School Dances in the area. We truly pioneered the mobile DJ concept. Now anyone with a laptop, loaded with MP3's, mixing software and powered speakers is an instant DJ. But back in the very early days, most of the equipment simply did not exist, requiring us to design and build our own.The one thing still applies today, which is that Cerwin Vega speakers rule for large outdoor events, as well as auditorium sized indoor ones.
Check out several videos on my channel by searching on "SMJ and their Golden Discs" to hear audio recorded from actual dances in the 70's!
