You Can't Always Get What You Want (lit. "You Can't Always Get What You Want") is a song by the Rolling Stones included on their 1969 album Let It Bleed, and the B-side of the single Honky Tonk Women. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, it was listed by Rolling Stone magazine at number 100 on its list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. The song was recorded between November 16 and 17, 1968 in collaboration with the "London Bach Choir". A curiosity is the fact that in this song the drummer of the band (Charlie Watts) is replaced by the Rolling Stones' producer (Jimmy Miller); the piano, organ and French horn are played by Al Kooper while Rocky Dijion enjoys himself with the conga and maracas. Many urban legends continue to exist regarding the origins of this song, very similar to You're So Vain by Carly Simon. The most notable is that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were in Indiana for a concert at Ball State University in 1968 (coincidentally, Robert F. Kennedy was in the same Indiana town two days before Martin Luther King was assassinated). According to legend, Mick ordered a "cherry soda" from John Birkemeier, a Ball State University student who worked at the bar. Birkeimer told Mick that they didn't have cherries to make the cocktail. Mick couldn't believe it, and the boy responded by saying: "You can't always get what you want", thus inspiring the song. In support of this theory, the fact remains that every time the Rolling Stones perform in this area, the then-boy, John Birkemeier, receives free tickets to the concert and a limousine waiting to take him there.
