NEW LESSON/COVER EVERY WEEK!
In this video, I'll be sharing one of my warm-ups with you guys. I love doing it as it's both challenging, wakes you up, and gets you warm. In addition, by exploring the concept, you can discover some pretty cool new patterns and fills that you've previously never come up with or thought of. This is the beauty of restrictions and limitations within creative environments.
So for this specific challenge, these are the "rules":
-It has to be Linear.
-It has to be in Groove Position.
-You may only play Hi-Hat, Accent/Ghost on Snare, and Bass Drum.
-Your hands are limited to Single Strokes.
-Your foot is limited to Single or Double Strokes.
-You have to play every 16th note, in other words: NO RESTS.
Try to not be overly repetitive! At first it's definitely tricky to be creative while keeping the momentum, but this is how we challenge our brain.
This "exercise" also helps our body dealing with situations where it has to quickly adjust or recover. As you try to improvise different things, there will definitely be times where your body is hesitant, or your ear is fooling you. These are great simulations of what happens when you're in a live performance and all of the sudden get a bit of a brain fart, or hit something you weren't expecting, etc. Working on this will help those situations!
I hope you guys will have a fantastic weekend. Get practicing! I'll see you guys at NAMM!
