I find it curious that Star Trek's United Federation of Planets is often held up as an aspirational positive future for humanity while the United Citizen Federation in Starship Troopers is framed as an authoritarian pseudo-fascist dystopia. They're very similar in most respects, and I think the major difference comes down the the underlying assumptions about what drives human decision-making on an individual level.
