Just four years after visiting Africa for the first time, the Cricket World Cup headed to the Americas in 2007, in which the Caribbean island region of the West Indies had played hosts to the 16 of best cricket teams in the world.

The West Indies comprises several independent island countries, and these include Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago among others. Eight of these nations were chosen to host matches.

However, the West Indies were represented in international cricket as a composite team made up of players from six Caribbean cricket associations - Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Leeward Islands and the Windward Islands.

In this tournament, all of the 16 teams were initially divided into four groups, with the top 2 from each group moving on to a "Super 8" format. From this, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and South Africa won through to the semi-finals, with the Aussies defeating Sri Lanka by 53 runs in the final to win their third Cricket World Cup title in a row and their fourth overall. Australia's astonishing unbeaten record in the tournament increased their total to 29 consecutive World Cup matches without a loss, a streak dating back to the group stages of the 1999 tournament.

The 2007 tournament tallies the highest ticket sales for a Cricket World Cup, selling more than 672,000. Attendance leading into the semi-finals for the 2007 World Cup was 403,000, an average of 8,500 supporters per match.
