This tutorial is on how to quickly change the transparency (or opacity) and do a fade in or fade out of a layer in After Effects. It takes just a couple seconds.

1:23 Create a Fade In
2:07 Create a Fade Out
Here’s a quick recap:
First, select the layer in the Comp who’s transparency or opacity you want to change. Then hit the “T” key. Next find where it says 100% and adjust as needed. 0% = you won’t see the layer at all.
To create a fade in, with the opacity of the layer set to 100%, move your time position indicator to where you want the layer to be fully opaque (AKA faded in). Click the stopwatch icon for the Opacity property of the layer. Move the time position indicator for where you want the transition to begin. Change the 100% to 0% for the Opacity property.
To create a fade out, find the time where you want the transition to begin. Click the stopwatch if there are no keyframes already created on the Opacity property. If there already are keyframes (probably because you created a fade in) click the add keyframe diamond button for the Opacity property. Make sure the Opacity property is set to 100% when you do this. Then go to where you want the transition to end and change the value to 0%.
