In 2001; three years on since the city played hosts to Asia's first Commonwealth Games in history, Kuala Lumpur set the stage for the 21st Southeast Asian Games - the first of the new millennium. Held from 8 to 17 September, this was the 5th occasion that Malaysia took its turn as the event's hosts, following 1965, 1971, 1977, and 1989.

Malaysian organizers used a mix of new, existing and temporary venues, and there is never a need of major retrofitting work being done in most facilities in time for the 2001 SEA Games, given that most of them has already been used for the 1998 Commonwealth Games, which is another major event that the Malaysian capital had successfully staged.

Over 4,000 athletes have taken part at the Kuala Lumpur Games, which featured 391 events in 32 sports. Eventually, this was the last to involve 10 participating Southeast Asian countries, with then-newly independent Timor Leste making its debut at the next Games in Vietnam - thus expanding this number to 11 nations.
