A powerful G4-class geomagnetic storm is expected to hit Earth starting today, October 10, and could continue through tomorrow. This storm results from a large coronal mass ejection (CME) that erupted from the Sun on October 8, following an intense X1.8-class solar flare. This event is projected to bring significant impacts on Earth, including potential disruptions to power grids, satellite operations, GPS systems, and radio communications.

A G4 storm is classified as severe, meaning it may cause voltage irregularities and unexpected shutdowns of equipment designed to protect electrical infrastructure. In addition to technological impacts, the storm is also expected to enhance auroras, making them visible much farther south than usual—potentially as far as California, Alabama, and other central U.S. states. For those interested in observing the northern lights, tonight and tomorrow night present an excellent opportunity, particularly in areas away from city lights.

Space weather experts advise that this storm could unfold unpredictably. The orientation and strength of the CME's magnetic field when it reaches Earth will determine its ultimate impact. For real-time updates, you can follow NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), which will monitor the storm’s progression and issue alerts as necessary.

Now that the Iceland volcanic eruption is over, we'll be pointing our camera to the stars to capture the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) over the Sundhnúkur Crater Row near Grindavik in Iceland.
