Drink driver is arrested for driving home from court after getting disqualified for hit and run
A Range Rover driver drove his car home from court just minutes after being banned from the roads - then claimed he didn't realise the ban started straight away. Steven Luck was banned from driving on Tuesday (October 1) after he was involved in a crash in May. A court heard how he failed to stop at the scene of the smash, then when later arrested was found to be nearly three times the drink drive limit, Teeside Live reports. Luck was disqualified from the roads for 28 months and handed a £2,500 fine. But just minutes after leaving court, the 39-year-old got into his Range Rover and headed home.
Durham Police said that 'upon leaving the court, Luck decided the best way to get home would be by driving'. He was reported so officers followed him, before pulling him over and arresting him again.
Within 30 minutes of leaving the court, he was back in police custody. Luck, of Middlehope Way, Darlington, appeared at the court on Wednesday and was banned from the roads for a further year.
He was also given an eight-week prison sentence. Durham Police have since released footage of Luck's arrest and interview. As he was detained by police he was asked: "Are you aware you've been to court and you've been disqualified?" He replied: "I didn't know it starts straight away, does it?"
The force posted to its Facebook page: "He was reported getting into his car outside of court, so Special Constable Howells travelled on blue lights to locate him entering the Darlington area. In light of his new driving ban, Luck was graciously offered a lift (to Darlington Police Station). "Within 30 minutes of leaving court, he was back in police custody and put before another court on Wednesday, where he was given a further 12-month driving disqualification and an 8-week prison sentence.
