These are 4 tools that I would absolutely implement off the bat if I were to walk into a new environment today, assuming a similar tool was not already present. Lansweeper and PDQ-Deploy do have some overlap. Where Lansweeper has the ability to push software and PDQ does have an inventory plugin, but I prefer a best of breed approach when it comes to these tools. They both excel at different things and well worth having both in your pocket.
- PDQ-Deploy - This is my go to for deploying software, running scripts and querying systems. It is inexpensive and usually an easy sell to management. It is incredibly helpful, especially when you are a 1 or 2 person department and spread across different locations. Very quick to push an app, a script etc.
- Lansweeper - Lansweeper is another favorite. Cost-effective, easy sell to management and it gives you a lot of visibility into the inventory of your environment. You can keep track of warranty expirations, systems missing AV, and a whole slew of other reports. Many custom reports are available for your needs as well.
- PSTools - This one is a freebie! It is put out by Microsoft's Sysinternals team and is a set of Powershell tools that you can use to query and run commands against remote systems. I've leveraged this in combination with PDQ-Deploy when I've had to run bulk queries across an environment. It is a very powerful suite of tools. There is a little bit of leg work to be done to get this working in the environment but the benefits are well worth it.
- Password Manager - I will typically lean on Keepass or LastPass however, I don't really have a favorite, other than it is a tool that I would absolutely implement if an environment didn't already have it. There are so many devices and systems that require passwords to access them. You can leverage a good password manager not only to memorize those passwords, but generate good, strong passwords.
