What is a Switch Device?

A switch is a networking device that connects multiple devices within a local area network (LAN) and operates at the data link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model. Unlike hubs, switches can manage data traffic more efficiently by directing data only to the specific device it is intended for.
Key Functions of a Switch:

1. Data Packet Switching:
Switches receive incoming data packets and examine their destination addresses before forwarding them to the appropriate port, ensuring that data reaches only the intended recipient device.

2. Reducing Data Collisions:
By sending data only to the specific destination device, switches significantly reduce the chances of data collisions, improving overall network performance.

3. MAC Address Table:
Switches maintain a table of MAC addresses, mapping each device’s MAC address to the specific port it is connected to. This allows for efficient data packet forwarding.

4. Full-Duplex Communication:
Switches support full-duplex communication, allowing simultaneous sending and receiving of data on the same connection, which enhances network speed and efficiency.

5. Segmentation and VLANs:
Switches can segment a network into smaller, more manageable sections and support Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) for improved security and performance.
