2. Unlike Fractions: Unlike fractions, also known as unlike denominators, are fractions that have different denominators. In this case, the fractions represent different-sized parts or divisions of the whole. When working with unlike fractions, additional steps may be required to compare or perform operations with them. For example:
1/3 and 2/5 are unlike fractions because they have different denominators (3 and 5).
To perform operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division with unlike fractions, you usually need to find a common denominator. The common denominator is a shared multiple of the original denominators that allows you to combine or compare the fractions easily.
For instance, to add 1/3 and 2/5, you need to find a common denominator. In this case, the least common multiple (LCM) of 3 and 5 is 15. By converting both fractions to have a denominator of 15, you can then add them:
(1/3) × (5/5) = 5/15
(2/5) × (3/3) = 6/15
Now, you can add the fractions: 5/15 + 6/15 = 11/15.
Understanding the distinctions between like fractions and unlike fractions can help when working with fractions and performing operations involving them.
