This is the story of one of the most horrific cycling crashes of all time. Fabio Jakobsen of @Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team was forced off his line by Dylan Groenewegen currently of @Team BikeExchange-Jayco and smashed into the barriers at nearly 80kph/49mph. Fabio suffered horrific injuries including a brain contusion, fractured skull, ten teeth lost, and parts of his upper and lower jaws gone. He was air-lifted to the hospital where he remained in an induced coma for a couple of days.
This is where his road to recovery started. The team from Michiel Wouters TanTechniek got to work on healing Fabio’s devastating injuries. First, they began reconstructing the bone to get the bone back. After waiting a few months to allow for healing they began the planning of the teeth and placed the implants underneath. Luckily, Fabio had a master cast of his teeth from six months before the crash so the team had his original teeth in the lab that they were able to digitalize. Which enabled them to give him back his original teeth with exactly the same setup aside from a few minor adjustments.
To complete this work the team chose to use the NobelProcera® Zirconia Implant Bridge because “it’s biologically the best material available on the market right now” Michiel Wouters. Also, aesthetically it provided the best outcome possible and Nobel Biocare could provide a full end-to-end solution with the bridge and implants. After an intensive rehabilitation period, Fabio was incredibly pleased with the result and can now live happily with his new teeth.
