Ladakh, a region in India, has been experiencing significant protests in recent weeks. The people of Ladakh are demanding statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which would provide them with more autonomy and representation. They are also seeking job reservations for locals and a parliamentary seat each for Leh and Kargil. These demands are a result of the region's transition into a Union Territory following the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A in 2019, which has led to concerns about the region's democratic representation and the potential loss of their tribal identity.

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has been leading the protests, having launched a hunger strike on March 6 after talks with the government failed to address these concerns. The hunger strike, which entered its 15th day, has gained support from various groups, including the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and the Leh Apex Body (LAB). The KDA has called for a half-day general strike on March 20 in solidarity with Wangchuk and his demands.

The protests have been met with resistance from the central government, with a Union home ministry committee refusing to concede to the demands of constitutional safeguards for Ladakh. However, the protesters remain determined to continue their struggle for democratic rights and representation.

Latest News:

On March 20, the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) called for a half-day general strike in solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike.
Activist Wangchuk has been broadcasting regular video messages on social media platforms to draw attention to the fragile environment of Ladakh.
The KDA announced that along with Hussain and Qamar Ali Akhoon, a former J&K minister from the National Conference party and another co-convenor of KDA, they would join Wangchuk's fast.
The talks with the Union government have ended in a deadlock, and the LAB-KDA combine is planning a meeting to chalk out the future course of action.
The KDA has been leading the talks with the MHA panel headed by junior home minister, Nityanand Rai.
