Pieces of a Puzzle | Fire and Ice: Volcanic and Glacial Interactions
How did a 2008 volcanic eruption on land impact the surrounding marine environments? The #EruptionArchives science team is working to solve this puzzle using state-of-the-art tools available on R/V Falkor (too): high-resolution seafloor mapping and sampling in the fjords adjacent to the Chilean town of Chaitén. They are collecting core samples to reconstruct this volcanic unit through sediment records, assembling a complete picture to expand our knowledge of how volcanic activity affects marine ecosystems and, potentially, volcanic behavior in southern Chile over thousand-year timescales.
