If you ever thought of redirecting all your 404s to the homepage or you already have, you should stop. By redirecting all 404 errors to your homepage you cause confusion among your users, and Google more often than not still treats like a 404 (or what's known as a soft 404).
Instead, it's better to simply redirect broken links to their relevant pages if you delete an article about the top 5 WordPress caching plugins, but you also have a top 10 WordPress caching plugins post this would be an appropriate redirect.
But redirecting users to the homepage just for the sake of not having any 404 errors is not only a bad idea it's a dumb one at that.
