Let's set the scene for you:
October 7th, 2020, Central Massachusetts(New England at it's best in the fall): brisk mornings, beautiful foliage, apple picking... and also a tornado/ microburst/... or a... derecho? Wait, huh? You can say for sure that this is not our typical(actually, never) weather that comes into Massachusetts. In this video, I show you the damage it caused and to find out what a Derecho is.
A derecho is rare in New England, especially in the fall. A derecho is defined as an ongoing straight line wind damage event, that stretches at least 250 miles long and at least 60 miles wide. Wind gusts of 58 mph or greater and hail is also possible, and winds can actually get as high as 100 mph. In this case, we had gusts of 50 mph - 70 mph in many communities.
What is a derecho? (/dəˈreɪtʃoʊ/, from Spanish: derecho [deˈɾetʃo], "straight" as in direction) is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm that is associated with a fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms known as a mesoscale convective system[1] and potentially rivaling hurricanic and tornadic forces. Derechos can cause hurricane-force winds, tornadoes, heavy rains, and flash floods.
