Presbyopia, an age-related condition that makes it difficult for the eyes to focus on nearby objects, continues to be a challenge for both patients and eye care professionals. However, with the introduction of new medications, alternatives now exist beyond traditional options like glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. In this episode of the Defocus Media podcast, Dr. Darryl Glover and Dr. Jennifer Lyerly speak with ophthalmologist Dr. Marc Odrich about a new presbyopia treatment in development, aceclidine. They discuss how aceclidine works, its benefits compared to existing treatments like pilocarpine, and how it could change the way presbyopia is managed.
The podcast highlights the key differences between aceclidine and pilocarpine. While pilocarpine is an important first step in creating eye drops to treat presbyopia, it has some limitations, such as a short duration of action, the need for frequent doses, and a tendency to cause temporary nearsightedness.
Aceclidine, by contrast, shows in clinical trials to last up to ten hours with a single dose, reducing the need for frequent reapplication and making it easier for patients to use throughout the day. Additionally, aceclidine has less effect on the ciliary muscle, which means it doesn’t cause the temporary nearsightedness associated with pilocarpine, allowing patients to maintain clear distance vision.
As research continues, treatments like aceclidine offer hope for a more convenient and effective way to manage presbyopia, bringing eye care one step closer to providing solutions that seamlessly fit into patients' everyday lives.
