There are times in programming when the type of data you have at hand is not the type of data you need. Many object oriented languages supply classes and functions to handle data conversion. In some cases you may also be able to 'cast' or 'coerce' one data type to another. Here I look at some of the options available in two popular languages -- Ruby and C# - but the principles apply to other languages too.
