O friend and brother,
too soon, far too soon,
you left us!
In grief, we mourn you,
And yet we rise again
To praise the One
Who gives us life.
With the saints give rest,
O Christ, to the soul
of your servant,
where there is no toil,
nor grief, nor sighing,
but life everlasting.
Only you are immortal,
the creator and maker
of humankind:
yet we are mortal,
formed from the dust of the earth,
and unto earth we shall return:
for so, did you ordain,
when you created me saying:
“You are dust and unto dust you shall return.”
We all go down to dust;
and weeping over the grave,
we make our song:
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
