Maja dessert or maja blanca is coconut pudding with corn. It sounds complicated, but it’s not! Try this recipe to know how easy it is!
This Filipino dessert is a common one, along with puto, kutsinta, pichi-pichi, and kalamay. It is primarily made from coconut milk. It is creamy and white in color, with a gelatin-like consistency. Some would say that it’s texture is like that of panna cotta, but they do differ in taste due to the coconut milk. Brown coconut cream curds or latik are traditionally used as toppings. Well, there were changes when cheese became a thing. It is now commonly topped with the kid’s favorite cheese.
In making maja, coconut milk and cornstarch mixture is heated and stirred until the desired consistency. Other variations use agar or gelatin as a substitute to cornstarch. It makes the resulting product firmer.
