What is OPT in USA
If you are an international student in the United States on an F-1 visa, you might have heard of OPT or Optional Practical Training. OPT is a type of work authorization that allows you to gain practical experience in your field of study after completing your degree. In this blog post, we will explain what OPT is, how to apply for it, and what are the benefits and challenges of working on OPT.
What is OPT?
OPT stands for Optional Practical Training. It is a benefit offered to students on F-1 visas who have studied full time for one academic year and completed their degree in the United States. It gives you one year of work authorization in the United States after graduation and possibly an extension of two years for students who have graduated in certain STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
OPT allows you to work for any employer in the United States as long as the job is directly related to your major area of study. You can work part time (20 hours or less per week) or full time (more than 20 hours per week) depending on whether you are doing pre-completion OPT or post-completion OPT.
Pre-completion OPT is any portion of OPT used before your program end date. You can apply for pre-completion OPT after you have been enrolled full time for one academic year at a SEVP-certified school. You can work part time while school is in session and full time when school is not in session.
Post-completion OPT is any portion of OPT used after your program end date. You can apply for post-completion OPT up to 90 days before your program end date and up to 60 days after your program end date. You must work at least 20 hours per week or full time on post-completion OPT.
