Hydraulic fracturing or fracking has been booming in several states as a way to get oil or natural gas.
When a company wants to access those natural resources below the earth's surface, they start by drilling a hole more than 5-thousand feet below.
When it gets to the point where the drill reaches the shale layer, it turns and starts the fracturing process, creating holes in the shale layer, that's a soft kind of rock that splits easily. A water truck injects water and chemicals into the earth's surface, and then the well pulls the recovered water with the natural resources out.
