Open Notepad++
Navigate to: Settings - Preferences - Backup
Ensure that "Remember current session for next launch" and "Enable session snapshot and periodic backup" are selected
So these items allowed you to get your program to remember previous session, and open where you left off.
maybe before that you should:
Completely quit out of Notepad++
Deleted the session.xml file found here:
C:\Users\XXXX\AppData\Roaming\Notepad++
