There could be as many as 850,000 child sex offenders in the UK alone, the National Crime Agency (NCA) has warned. The latest figure is significantly higher than the previous estimate of 300,000, which was calculated based on the number of registered sex offenders as well as the amount of people who look at child abuse images online.

Produced by James Allen, this documentary explores communities wanting to know how far away a pedophile lives from their families. Some say that an open registry of pedophiles is absolutely necessary to protect the children, and that the price they must pay for their abuse of children is the knowledge of who they are and where they are living. Others afraid that this can lead to a rise of vigilantes.

Unlike the United States, there is still no process in the UK for you to find out if a child sex offender lives in your area. Alternatively you can go to a police station and ask them for a 'Child Sex Offenders Disclosure Scheme Form' (Sarah's Law, enacted on 1996), or Form 284.
