When you’re measuring lights on a set, contrast ratios is an easy way to compare the differences in brightness. Contrast ratios can also be great way to determine if a lighting setup is high key or low key lighting. Today on 4 Minute Film School, Valentina Vee is going to show you how to use lighting contrast practically on set while she shoots a music video.

In this video, Valentina from the A-Team will walk you through how she shoots a music video while incorporating contrast ratios into her lighting. First, she sets up the shot. This includes the angle of the camera in the location, the camera height, and any set decoration for the shot. Next, she starts lighting the shot. She uses the theme of the song to influence the lighting choices. Lastly, she balances the lighting using a light meter to measure each light individually. This will help determine the lighting ratio.

Lighting contrast ratios are a great way to improve your lighting and add consistency to your shots. Professional cinematographers use lighting ratios all the time so that they know their lighting contrast is the same between different shots. Especially if they’re shooting across multiple days or locations. Make sure to match the contrast ratios with the mood of the project in order to keep the feeling consistent between visuals and story.
