Why don't skateboards have brakes?

Struggling to ride down hills without brakes forced me to learn how to control my speed in various ways. So I think it was good that I didn't have brakes as a crutch while learning.
Once I unlocked this hill, I would skate down it every morning on the way to class at 8am, breakfast in hand. It's a great hill. Steep enough that it was slightly scary even after I'd done it a bunch of times, but not recklessly steep. I probably wouldn't be riding down this every day, if I lived there right now though.
