What are electronic cigarettes?

Electronic cigarettes (electronic fags) are small, slim tubes, containing cartridges, that look and feel similar to conventional cigarettes. The cartridge connects to a small heating element that is activated when you take a draw. The nicotine containing liquid, known as e-liquid, is drawn from the cartridge and then heats up; and a small amount of vapour is released. As you suck, the vapour is drawn into your lungs, so e-cigs act just like you would expect with smoke from a conventional ciggie.
You buy your favoured strength of nicotine or choose to have none.
Could these be an aid to giving up smoking or do they encourage new and young smokers?
