Residents of Southern Connecticut no longer have to drive up to Hartford or all the way down to New York because starting yesterday, Avelo Airlines began flying from New Haven's Tweed Airport to six destinations: Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando, Sarasota, Tampa, & West Palm Beach. Avelo Airlines (formerly Casino Express Airlines, then Xtra Airways) is an American ultra-low-cost carrier based out of Burbank, CA. Looking for an Eastern base, they fixated on New Haven, CT, a coastal city on the Long Island Sound lacking passenger air service since American Airlines left Tweed Airport earlier this fall.
