The song is based on a very famous poetic travel diary written in the Edo Period by a Japanese poet, Matsuo Basho, as he traveled through Japan on foot. The original text is titled "Oku no Hosomichi, or "Narrow Road to the Interior". Many lines of this song make reference to famous lines from this text. I don't think you guys particularly need or want a history/Japanese Literature lesson, so I'll stop there, but you can always google it for more info or send me a message on tumblr.
