Replacing a rear strut on a 2009 Honda Element EX isn't the easiest driveway mechanic's job, but with the right tools it's not an impossible task.
Tools:
19mm socket (to remove lug nuts)
17mm impact socket (to remove strut bolt)
15mm socket (to remove top strut nuts)
10mm socket (for driver side, moving box that blocks strut removal)
A ratchet that fits your sockets
A breaker bar--the longer the better. The bolt can be very hard to loosen.
WD-40 (To loosen the strut's bolt)
One or more crowbar
A jack
A jack stand
A rubber hammer may help re-insert the strut's bolt.
A friend be very helpful, especially for compressing the new strut, lining up the holes and installing the new bolt.
The parts I used were the following:
Duralast Loaded Strut Assembly LS33-80372L (For driver side)
Duralast Loaded Strut Assembly LS33-80372R (For passenger side)
If you have to cut off your existing bolts (because the welded round nut breaks lose from the vehicle) you'll need the following tools:
Angle grinder, with metal cutting disk
Hearing protection
Eye protection
You'll also need a replacement bolt if you cut off the original one. I used Grade 8 1/2" diameter 3" length Flange Bolts and corresponding Grade 8 Flanged Hex Nuts. Those match the grade, length and diameter of the OEM bolt. I found them at Tractor Supply Co. If you do this, you'll also need a wrench/socket that fits the new bolt and nut.
Any auto-repairs you attempt based on this video are done at your own risk.
