Silk Road was the first of many dark web marketplaces that allowed people to anonymously purchase products online. Naturally, this service gravitated towards illegal substances like drugs and counterfeit products. It didn't take long until Silk Road and other dark web copycats attracted the attention of the national government, who understandably wanted to shut down the illegal drug sales and other shady ongoings of Silk Road.
This ultimately led to a long but complicated battle, in which the Silk Road founder, Ross Ulbricht, got caught by two FBI agents. The tragic thing is, Ross Ulbricht wasn't even personally involved in the illegal drug trades or "hitman for hire" charges that were being thrown around - he was merely the creator of the platform that allowed others to engage in these activities. He's currently serving a double life sentence and his only hope for release is a presidential pardon.
