That a former Friends star was set to take the role of Phil Dunphy in the show? It’s safe to say that actor Ty Burrell made the character of Phil Dunphy in Modern Family his own. Burell has won multiple awards for his performance as Dunphy since stepping into the role for Modern Family. However, he was nearly passed up on the role in favor of former Friends star Matt Le Blanc. The former Joey Tribbiani actor was sent a script for Modern Family in pre-production but after taking one look at the script, Le Blanc decided the role wasn’t for him, and casting directors chose Ty Burrell instead. Le Blanc has said of his decision to pass on the role, “I remember reading the script and thinking ‘this is a really good script’ but I’m not the guy for this.” Thankfully for Burrell, he was the guy the show was crying out for.
