WHAT IS Fracking – Hydraulic Fracturing Explained

WHAT IS -- Simple videos that deliver bite-sized information on the latest stuff.

Hydraulic Fracturing, also known as Fracking, is a technique that recovers natural gas and oil from shale rock. The process involves drilling down into the earth and then turning horizontally continuing for miles. The aim is to reach tiny cracks in the rock that contain particles of gas. A mixture of Slickwater, Proppants and chemicals are pumped in at high pressure to widen the cracks. Proppants (similar to sand) are used to hold the cracks open, allowing the gas to be flushed out, bringing the gas back to the surface. The technology and technique of Fracking will continue to advance. The disadvantages of Fracking are it uses a significant amount of water. The carcinogenic (cancer causing) chemicals used could escape and contaminate nearby groundwater. Fracking can cause small earthquakes. The advantages of Fracking are that it can extract difficult-to-get gas and oil. Fracking is an opportunity to produce electricity at half of the CO2 emissions produced by coal. Drilling firms must have a fracking licence.
