Teaching piano finger numbers is an important part of piano lessons. This is one of the first subjects that piano students learn. Piano finger numbers make your piano learning journey easier in the long run.
When reading piano scores, you will observe that there are numbers written near the notes. The composer or editor is letting you (the performer) know what finger to use for a specific note.
The numbers correspond to the fingers of each hand. On either hand, your thumb will always be finger 1. Your index finger is finger 2, your middle finger is 3, your ring finger is 4 and your pinky finger will always be finger 5.
Scales and Piano Finger Numbers
Let's say you're playing your first scale, which is usually the C major scale: C D E F G A B C. The fingering for this scale is 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 5 for the right hand and 5 4 3 2 1 3 2 1 for the left hand. Since you know how your fingers are numbered, you know your finger placement (or what fingers go where on the piano keyboard) for this particular scale. Piano finger numbers are useful for every scale.
The piano finger numbering system helps you with chords, arpeggios and musical passages. Correct fingering helps with speed and playing comfortably. It helps you play complex pieces.
The finger numbering system is valuable at all levels. They give advanced piano students and even concert performers an insight into how to play phrases.
