RAID controllers protect, perform, and manage. Learn what a RAID controller is and what it does for your data.

A RAID controller -- or redundant array of independent disks controller -- manages the data stored across hard disks by a RAID configuration. Serving as a layer of abstraction between an operating system and the physical disks storing data, a RAID controller presents groups of disks as logical units to applications.

The controller can access multiple copies of data on multiple physical devices, which improves performance and adds another layer of security in the event of a system crash. RAID controllers can be hardware or software based, but software controllers only provide about half the performance of a hardware controller.

Do you use software or hardware for your RAID controllers? How is the performance? Lets us know in the comments, and please hit the like button.
