I am not here to defend myself. Many of the allegations against me are dismissed by some historians as misunderstandings, exaggeration, mockery or malicious fantasy. I am here to say what they accuse me of. Although I ruled only for four years, I am remembered in history for my brutality and fear-inspiring reputation.
My reign is considered one of the darkest periods in Roman history. They say I was paranoid, suspecting even my closest advisors and family members of plotting against me. I was obsessed with luxury and that I indulged in lavish extravagances, including building massive temples, hosting elaborate parties, and making outrageous demands from the Senate. I executed several prominent senators, including my own cousin and brother-in-law. Also, I used Roman’s legions as a personal execution squad.
